Spotify Chart Watch – Apr. 15, 2014

Check out the latest Spotify-50 and Spotify Viral charts from all territories: http://www.spotifyartists.com/charts

Global Highlights:

The Chart Watch took a week off last week to search for the “next big thing” in the deserts of Indio at Coachella, but while we were gone not much changed on the Global Spotify-50. 2014’s original “next big thing” remains the biggest song in the world this week, as Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” tops the chart for the fourth week in a row.

This track has been streamed more than 63 million times since it was released in January and shows no signs of slowing down; global streams of the song increased by about 300,000 last week keeping the track far ahead of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse”, which comes in at #2 for the 4th week.

“All of Me”, the ballad from John Legend, enjoyed a big bump in streams this week: a 500,000 stream increase helped the track jump two spots #5-#3 (more on this song’s US success in a bit), and to make room for Legend in the Top 3, The Chainsmokers’ “#SELFIE” and Mr. Probz’ “Waves” both fell a spot (#3-#4 and #4-#5, respectively).

By far, the most Viral song in the world this week was the new track from Ed Sheeran called “Sing”, the lead single from the new album x, set for release in June. Sheeran supplemented the track’s release this past weekend with an excellent performance on Saturday Night Live. All of this combined with the fact that Pharrell Williams provided production and guest vocals for the track shows that we’ll be seeing “Sing” on the Spotify-50 in no time.

SZATop Dawg Entertainment has already had a run of stars making a big impact on the Viral Chart this year (see: Schoolboy Q, Isaiah Rishad, Kendrick Lamar), and this week they’ve got another. Maplewood, NJ’s SZA released her third EP Z last week, and a pair of tracks from the record debut in the Top-5 of the Viral Chart: “Babylon”, which features Kendrick Lamar, is at #2 and “Child’s Play” (featuring Chance the Rapper) comes in at #5.

Norwegian producer/artist Todd Terje is #3 on the Global Viral Chart this week. His debut album It’s Album Time came out last week and features a cover of the Robert Palmer song “Johnny and Mary”, featuring guest vocals from Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry. That track was the most-shared track on the album by far, and places Terje in the Viral Top-3.

US Highlights:

Last week John Legend wrested the top spot on the US Spotify-50 away from Katy Perry and remains on top this week. Despite a small dip in streams, “All of Me” remains #1 in the US, while “Dark Horse” sits at #2 for the second week after 11 weeks at the top.

“Talk Dirty”, from Jason Derulo and 2 Chainz, spends its fourth week at #3 this week. It’s been in the Top 3 since February 9th but (largely due to Perry’s dominance) hasn’t reached the top yet.

JohnLegendBastille’s “Pompeii” and “Let It Go” from the Frozen soundtrack switch places and round out the Top 5. These five tracks have comprised the US Top 5 for the last four weeks and it doesn’t look like there are any immediate contenders to crash the party.

Ed Sheeran holds the top spot on the US Viral Chart, though with the SNL/Pharrell connections this shouldn’t be much of a surprise!

The Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit is already huge in the Nordics, but their forthcoming new album Stay Gold might be the record that breaks them Stateside. If lead single “My Silver Lining” is any indication, we’ll be hearing a lot about this band this summer; the track debuts at #2 on the US Viral Chart this week.

Jack White’s “High Ball Stepper”, the instrumental pseudo-lead single from Lazaretto (due in June), rounds out the Top 3.

UK Highlights:

BlaccIn the US, we saw a long-standing #1 get knocked out of the top spot last week. This week it’s the UK’s turn for a new #1, as Clean Bandit ends its history 10-week run at the top. “The Man”, from Aloe Blacc, claims #1 this week, edging out Clean Bandit by just 2,200 streams! This is one of the closest races to the top we’ve seen here at the Chart Watch, so it’s quite possible “Rather Be” will be back on top next week. But for now, Aloe is the King of the UK Spotify-50!

It’s a bit surprising that John Legend’s “All of Me” wasn’t the track to knock “Rather Be” out of #1, as it had been sitting in the runner-up slot for the last two weeks. But despite a 50,000 stream increase this week, it wasn’t enough to fight off the Blacc surge and Legend actually dropped a spot #2-#3 this week.

“Dark Horse” falls a spot #3-#4 and last week’s big gainer, “I Got U” by Duke Dumont, drops a spot #4-#5. A wild week on the UK Spotify-50 for sure, watch this space to find out what happens next week!

Todd Terje took over the Viral Chart in the UK this week; two tracks from It’s Album Time take the top two spots (“Delorean Dynamite” and “Johnny and Mary”, respectively).

A new single from Jamie xx, “Sleep Sound” rounds out the UK Viral Top 3.

Ones to Watch:

Lana Del Rey is back with a new single called “West Coast”, and we definitely think you can expect to see it appear on the Viral Charts worldwide next week (and, eventually, on the toplists)! Look out for new music from Ray LaMontagne, Passenger, Timeflies, and a new album from Jason Derulo to make an impact as well!
