Spotify Chart Watch – Jan. 14, 2014

Check out the latest Spotify-50 and Spotify Viral charts from all territories: http://www.spotifyartists.com/charts

Global Highlights:

Pitbull and Ke$ha still hold the #1 spot on the Global Spotify-50 for the second week in a row. Their song “Timber” was streamed 6.8 million times around the world last week, that’s a million more than Eminem’s “The Monster”, which takes the #2 slot for the second week.

The rest of the Top 10 is virtually unchanged, with one big exception: “I See Fire”, Ed Sheeran’s contribution to the soundtrack for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, takes a massive jump from #12 to #6, thanks to a near 100% increase in streams.

Young The Giant releases their new album Mind Over Matter next week, and teasing the album by releasing tracks one at a time for the last few weeks. The title track came out last week and this week is the most Viral song in the world. This is the band’s second Viral #1 on this album campaign: lead single “It’s About Time” debuted at #1 on the global Viral Chart back in November.

The world is still crazy about Inside Llewyn Davis, the new Coen Brothers film about a struggling folk singer in the early 60s starring Oscar Isaac as the titular character. Isaac’s duet with Marcus Mumford, “Fare Thee Well” is #2 for a second week in a row. It’s the fifth week in the Top 5 on the Viral chart for this track, expect to see it in the Global Spotify-50 soon!

Last week’s most Viral song, “I See Fire”, falls two spots to #3.

US Highlights:

There’s a new #1 on the US Spotify-50, and it’s “Say Something” by A Great Big World. This track got its start crushing the Viral Chart and made the transition to the Spotify-50 a few weeks ago.

The band recently paid a visit to Spotify to talk about their quick ascent to the top of the chart: “We can’t even process it. We felt so alone when we wrote [that song]. And one part of it is we write to heal ourselves, but the other part is to connect with as many people as possible, and that’s what’s happening. We feel so lucky to be a party of it. So thank you, guys, for connecting with and sharing this song!”

However, their reign at the top might be short-lived, as Katy Perry also made a huge jump this week with her song “Dark Horse”. It jumped #6-#2 and is only 13,000 streams behind the leader. It’ll be exciting to see how this plays out next week!

Young The Giant takes Most Viral honors in the US, and a new Silversun Pickups song, “Cannibal” is #2. The track is a new song included on The Singles Collection, a Greatest Hits album due in the US on February 25th.

UK Highlights:

BBCLunaFor the first time, Pitbull and Ke$ha are back on top on the British Spotify-50. “Timber” is up two spots #3-#1 and this is actually the first time this song has topped the chart in the UK.

Last week’s #1, Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”, drops back to #2 and Avicii’s “Hey Brother” falls #2-#3.

A pair of indie darlings top the Viral Chart in the UK. Bombay Bicycle Club will release their new album So Long, See You Tomorrow on February 3 in the UK and single “Luna” was released this week. It debuts at #1 this week.

Meanwhile, the brooding, tense “Wanderlust” from Wild Beasts starts its Viral run at #2. Their new album Present Tense is out February 24th.

Ones to Watch:

This week saw new single releases from Foster The People, Neon Trees, Eric Church, Real Estate, Martin Garrix, and a huge collaboration between two of the world’s biggest pop stars: Shakira and Rihanna. Expect many of them to make an impact on both the Viral Charts and the Spotify-50 all around the world!
