The Summer of CalHar continues this week on the Spotify Charts.
“Summer” was far and away the most-streamed song in the world this week for the third week in a row, extending its lead over David Guetta’s “Bad” to a two-million+ stream advantage. “Summer” was streamed 9.19 times last week, the biggest one-week total since Eminem’s “The Monster” was streamed 9.45 million times in November of last year.
“Bad” switches spots with Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be”, which drops a spot #2-#3.
Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” has been breaking streaming records in the US for weeks and it’s rising up the Global chart too, jumping two spots this week #6-#4. To make room for Iggy, Mr. Probz’ “Waves” drops two spots #3-#5.
The most viral song in the world this week was the new single from South African zef-rap group Die Antwoord. “Pitbull Terrier” and its accompanying super-graphic music video was met with a mixture of confusion, disgust and acclaim and was definitely the most-talked-about song released this week. It’s all ahead of their new album, Donker Mag, due out on June 3rd.
deadmau5 is set to release his new album while(1<2) this year, and this week he released “Avaritia”, the first look from the album. It shows up at #2 on the Global Viral-50.
“Take Me To Church” a Spotify Viral favorite, is back in the Top-3 this week at #3, and last week’s top two viral songs – MJ’s “Love Never Felt So Good” and Porter Robinson’s “Sad Machine” – drop to #4 and #5 respectively.
Iggy Azalea is #1 on the US Spotify-50 for the fourth week in a row, and for the fourth week in a row “Fancy” breaks the record for most-streams of a song in one week in the US. This week “Fancy” picked up 3.37 million streams in the US, a giant 400,000 stream increase from last week. “Fancy” is already one of the most successful songs in the history of Spotify, and it looks like it’s just getting started!
But Iggy needs all of that momentum to keep the top spot, because Ariana Grande’s “Problem” (which features Azalea) is gaining streams in a big way as well. This week “Problem” was streamed 2.91 million times, which would have been good for #1 in any week ever … besides the last two weeks thanks to “Fancy”‘s dominance.
“Summer” is #3 in the US, far behind the Iggy/Ariana powerhouse at the top, and Coldplay’s EDM-influenced “A Sky Full of Stars” jumped ten spots #14-#4 to enter the Top-5 this week.
Disclosure’s “Latch” has been out for almost two years, but it finally cracked the Top-5 in the US this week, moving up a spot #6-#5. Bout time!
Cherub released their new album Year of the Caprese last week exclusively on Spotify, and thanks to their viral hit “Doses and Mimosas” the world was pumped about it. “Strip to This” was the most-talked-about song on the record and comes in at #1 on the US Viral Chart this week.
Porter Robinson spends his second week in a row at #2, and Milky Chance’s “Stolen Dance” jumped seven spots #10-#3.
Sylvan Esso and Hozier round out the Viral Top-5.
Mr. Probz’ “Waves” is #1 in the UK for the fourth week in a row, but for the first time during the song’s run it didn’t break the record for most streams in one week in the UK. The song’s total decreased from 1.42 million to 1.29 million, showing that listeners might be ready for a new number one.
That new number one looks to from someone familiar with chart-topping: “Summer” is #2 and “Fancy” is #3. Two Spotify favorites round out the Top-5, “Rather Be” and Kiesza’s “Hideaway” at #4 and #5, respectively.
For the last few we’ve been speculating on why the Brit’s have been listening to and sharing Baz Luhrmann’s 1998 cult hit “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” so much, and our exhaustive research concluded that British people like to play this song when it gets sunny. Guess the weather was great in the UK this week, because Luhrmann is #1 on the UK Viral Chart this week. It’s been in the Top-5 since May 4.
Porter Robinson’s “Sad Machine” didn’t make the Viral Chart in the UK last week, despite being quite popular everywhere else. But this week the UK caught on: the track is #2 on the Viral Chart.
Blue Swede’s 1974 classic “Hooked on a Feeling” was featured in the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, the new Marvel Comics superhero summer blockbuster out later this summer. If the Viral Chart is any indication, listeners are excited about this movie and its accompanying soundtrack: “Feeling” is #3 on the UK Viral Chart this week.
Ones to Watch:
Lana Del Rey, 5 Seconds of Summer. G-Eazy, deadmau5 and Nicki Minaj all released new tracks this week that should show up on the Spotify Charts, and John Mayer’s cover of Beyoncé’s “XO” was oft-discussed on the internet so it should probably appear on the Viral Charts in some capacity. New albums from Mariah Carey, Sharon Van Etten, and Austin Mahone should impact too.
