Global Highlights:

MAGIC! is making a strong late claim for Song of the Summer 2014. “Rude” spends its sixth week atop the Global Spotify-50 this week with a massive 9.79 million streams, up 400,000 streams from last week. This is the highest one-week stream total for any song in the history of Spotify, and the closest any song has ever come to breaking the magic 10-million-streams-in-a-week mark. If the song’s upward trajectory continues we might see that barrier broken soon.

The rest of the Top-3 is unchanged this week, as Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and Sia’s “Chandelier” stay far behind MAGIC! at #2 and #3, respectively.

Ariana Grande rounds out the top 5 with two tracks: “Break Free” jumps three spots #7-#3 and “Problem” goes #5-#4. This shows that excitement for Grande’s new album My Everything is at a fever pitch and we should expect to see lots of Grande on the charts after the album is released this week.

ODESZAMeghan Trainor jumps into the Global Top-10 this week, as “All About That Bass” amassed 6.1 million streams to jump twelve spots to #9. We’ll hear more about her later!

The most viral song in the world belongs to one of the most talked-about bands of the last decade and a half: Nickelback. Their new track “Edge of a Revolution” is the lead single from No Fixed Address, the new Nickelback album set to come out in November. Love em or hate em, the world is certainly still talking about this band.

Seattle electro-duo ODESZA is #2 on the Global Chart this week with their new song “Say My Name”. The track, featuring Zyra, is from their new album In Return, which is due out on September 9th. Alt-j’s “Every Other Freckle”, last week’s most viral track, falls to #3 this week.

US Highlights:

TrainorAs the summer winds down, the US is “All About That Bass”. Meghan Trainor’s smash debut single jumps from #3 into the top spot this week with 2.9 million streams, the most since MAGIC!’s US peak back in July. Trainor’s single is the latest example of the Spotify Viral Chart predicting what’s next on the Spotify Toplist: she first appeared on the Viral Chart (and in Spotify Chart Watch!) on July 8th, and has remained in the Viral Top-10 since, even despite the massive uptick in streams that powered the track into the Toplist. From the beginning it was clear that Spotify users were reacting to the positive message, super-catchy hook, and just about everything else in this song .. and their passion drove this newcomer to the top of the charts.

“All About That Bass” ends a three-week run atop the US chart for Sam Smith, as “Stay With Me” drops #1-#2 this week. It’s still 300,000 streams ahead of “Rude”, which takes #3.

Ariana Grande is doing well on the US Chart as well, with “Break Free” at #6, but it’s her collaboration with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj that’s doing the best this week. “Bang Bang” jumps #6-#4, making its first bow into the Top-5. Sia’s “Chandelier” rounds out the Top-5.

And the other Summer 2014 powerhouse, Iggy Azalea, is still making waves. “Fancy” is still in the Top-10 at #7, but another Iggy Azalea track is working its way up the charts fast. “Black Widow”, her track with British songstress Rita Ora, is up six spots and debuts in the Top-10 at #9.

Next week, it’ll be interesting to see if these results were heavily impacted by MTV’s Video Music Awards, or if these changes are here to stay!

The US Viral Top-3 consists of the same tracks as the Global Viral Top-3, just in a different order. ODESZA is #1, followed by Nickelback at #2 and Alt-j in the 3rd spot. Two of last week’s most viral tracks, Ryn Weaver’s “OctaHate” and The Knocks’ “Classic (featuring Powers)” round out the Top-5 at #4 and #5, respectively.

(Note: “All About That Bass” is still in the US Viral Top-10, this week coming in at #9. This bodes very well for this track for weeks to come!)

UK Highlights:

MAGIC! remains atop the UK Chart this week with 1.03 million streams. It’s the fifth week at #1 for “Rude”, and the fifth week in a row the track has broken a million streams.

The rest of the UK Top-3 is unchanged: Nico and Vinz are 150,000 streams behind MAGIC! with “Am I Wrong” at #2, and George Budapest’s “Ezra” is third. Sam Smith and Ariana Grande, two UK chart mainstays, round out the Top-5 with “Stay With Me” and “Problem”, respectively. Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t” is up a spot #7-#6, and his “Sing” is down #5-#6. Sia, Ella Henderson, and Mr. Probz, three artists who have seen plenty of success on the UK Charts, round out the Top-10.

GerardWayThe top of the UK Viral Chart looks very different from the Global and US Virals this week, with indie-electro artist Caribou taking the top spot. His new album Our Love is set for release in the UK in October, and its clear that British Spotify users are excited about it. Ben Howard will also release an album in October called I Forget Where We Are, and the title track from this highly-anticipated new album is #2 on the UK Viral Chart this week.

“No Shows”, the new single from ex-My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way, rounds out the Top-3. Way says that he’s attempting to “re-boot BritPop in America” with this new album, so if the first step towards that is “get really popular in the UK”, he’s off to a good start.

Ones to Watch:

This is a big week for new releases on Spotify, but all eyes are on Ariana Grande and her new album My Everything. She currently has three hits in the Top-10s of most countries around the world, so look for lots of music from the new album on the worldwide charts next week. Charli XCX, Maroon 5, Royal Blood, and The Griswolds should make an impact too.
