Starting this month, streaming data is now incorporated into the Top Charts in the UK. This is a big deal! We posted some thoughts on why this matters right here.
For the first time since May, there’s a new #1 on the Global Spotify-50. And it’s not from Ariana Grande or Iggy Azalea! MAGIC!, the Canadian reggae-pop band, has ousted Calvin Harris from the top spot with their summery jam “Rude”, ending a ten week run at the top of the chart for Harris’s “Summer”. MAGIC! jumped seven spots last week (#10-#3), so momentum was in this track’s favor. Still, just 19,000 streams separate these two hits, so it’ll be fascinating to see what happens next week. We’ll be here to track it all!
Ariana Grande’s “Problem” gets shut out of the top for another week, and this week drops a spot to #3.
Sam Smith’s ballad “Stay With Me” had a huge jump in streams this week. This spike helped propel the track up a whopping 17 spots into the Top-5 at #4, and Iggy Azalea rounds out the Global Top-5 with “Fancy”.
The only other debut in the Top-10 this week is from Sia, who has been having success on the Spotify Viral Charts for week with her track “Chandelier”. In another example of the Viral Chart picking a global hit, the song jumped into the Global Top-10 this week, up five spots #13-#8.
A quick glance at the Global Viral Chart will immediately tell you who owned the internet this week: “Weird Al” Yankovic. His album Mandatory Fun was released last week, and to celebrate he released eight videos for eight tracks on the album within eight days. Each one went viral and, as always, the Viral Chart captured it all: “Weird Al” holds the top four spots on the Global Viral-50 and eight of the Top 50 spots overall.
Interestingly, the #1 track wasn’t one of the tracks released as a video, which shows that users were utilizing Spotify to discover new music they had heard about, and then shared it with their friends. The most viral song in the world this week is right in Al’s wheelhouse; a polka medley called “NOW That’s What I Call Polka!”. “Word Crimes” (a parody of “Blurred Lines”), “Handy” (a parody of “Fancy”), and “Foil” (a parody of “Royals”), came it at #s 2-4.
The Global Viral Top-5 is rounded out by a newcomer: Nashville’s Shakey Graves. Spotify discovered him before he had even released anything officially and invited him to play at our SXSW House, and the session was released on Spotify this week. Users are clearly into it, as the live performance of his song “Dearly Departed” debuted at #5 on the Viral Chart this week.
MAGIC! took over the Global Spotify chart this week, but they’re already ruling in the US. That continues this week; “Rude” hit #1 for the third week in a row on the US Spotify-50 with nearly 3 million streams, besting ”Fancy” which stays at #2 for the third week in a row.
Sam Smith debuts on the US chart with “Stay With Me” at #3, pushing Ariana Grande down to #4 with “Problem”. Disclosure’s track with the aforementioned Sam Smith, “Latch”, holds steady at #5 for a second week.
“Weird Al” owns the Viral Chart in the US, as he does seven different Viral Charts across the world this week (Australia, UK, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, US).
Tracks from Mandatory Fun take the top four spots on the US Viral-50, and Shakey Graves’ Live at SpotifySXSW takes #5.
Ariana Grande continued her reign on top of the UK Spotify-50 this week, as “Problem” takes #1 for a second straight week with 995,000 streams. This is only the second week since April where the top track in the UK amassed less than one million streams in a week.
Ed Sheeran and George Budapest take #2 and #3 for the second week in a row with “Sing” and “Budapest”, respectively. Two familiar names round out the top 5: Ella Henderson with “Ghost” at #4, and Mr. Probz’ “Magic” is #5.
“Weird Al” takes all three of the top spots on the UK Viral Chart, along with #5 and #6. The only non-Mandatory Fun song in the Top-6 is Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”, which has been in the UK Viral Top-5 for most of the summer.
Ones to Watch:
Drake, Diplo, and Jason Aldean all put out big singles this week, and Viral-50 favorites BANKS, Spoon, Jessie Ware, and Weezer are sure to make impacts with their new songs as well. New albums from teen pop-rockers Five Seconds of Summer and Common should show up on the charts too.
