It’s the fifth week in a row at the top of the Global chart for MAGIC!, and the “Rude” train doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The Canadian reggae-poppers are atop the chart with 9.3 million streams, nearly a million and a half streams ahead of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” at #2. This is the third week in a row that the Global Top-2 has looked like this, and this is the biggest lead MAGIC! has enjoyed during their run.9.3 million is the highest stream total for a song since Calvin Harris’s “Summer” topped the charts in early June, setting up an epic battle for the statistical Song of the Summer battle. It’s going to head to the wire, and you’ll find out which songs were streamed the most in Summer 2014 (and which songs were the most viral!) in a future post here on SpotifyArtists.com.Sia stays at #3 for the second week in a row with her smash “Chandelier”, while Ariana Grande’s “Problem” and the aforementioned “Summer” switch places this week and come in at #4 and #5 in that order. At this point, it’s safe to say that anticipation for Alt-J’s new album This Is All Yours (out in September) is off the charts. “Every Other Freckle”, the third single from the album, is the third single to top the Global Viral Chart, showing that Spotify users are streaming and sharing these tracks at crazy rates.Spanish artist El Barrio released a new track called “He Vuelto” last week and it debuts at #2 on the Global Viral Chart this week. The track is in advance of his new album, Hijo del Levante, set for release in October.Coming in at #3 is the latest new artist to be uncovered by the Spotify Viral Chart, Ryn Weaver. She’s released her track “OctaHate” onto Spotify and it’s quickly taking over the playlists of users all over the world. Check out her new Promises EP, which comes out this week. Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos, Charli XCX, Cashmere Cat, and producer Benny Blanco all worked on the project.
MAGIC! runs the Global Chart right now, but Sam Smith has taken over the US. The crooner is #1 for a third straight week, sitting 280,000 streams ahead of “Rude” at #2.The US top two has looked like this for a few weeks, but the Top-3 has a fresh look this week thanks to Meghan Trainor, whose viral hit “All About That Bass” jumps five spots from #8 to #3 (after having jumped ten places last week). This track is a full-out smash, and we expect it to shake up that stagnant Top-2 in the very near future, potentially even as soon as next week. It’s an underdog story unfolding before our eyes!Sia’s “Chandelier” stays at #4 for the second week in a row, and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” drops two spots #3-#5.Ariana Grande doesn’t have a song in the top half of the Top-10, but she’s involved in three songs in the bottom half: “Bang Bang” (with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj) is #6, “Break Free” is #7, and “Problem” is #9. Her new album My Everything is out next week, so expect to see a lot more Ariana on the Spotify-50 before the summer’s out!Becky G’s “Shower” is the lone Top-10 debut this week, her track “Shower” is up three spots #11-#8. “Maps” by Maroon 5 rounds out the Top-10.Alt-J tops the US Viral Chart, followed closely by “OctaHate”. It’ll be interesting to see if the release of Weaver’s Promises EP buoys this song to the top spot next week, or if a new viral challenger will take the crown. At #3 is a new song from The Knocks (featuring Powers) called “Classic”, a pretty perfect song to add to your “late summer” playlist and share with your friends.
MAGIC! takes the top spot in the UK with 1.1 million streams, not much of a decrease from their chart-topping number last week. Nico & Vinz takes #2 for the second week in a row and George Ezra’s “Budapest” jumps back into the Top-3, up a spot #4-#3.The rest of the Top-10 is filled with familiar faces, with Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Ella Henderson, Sia, and Mr. Probz all making appearances.Alt-J is #2 on the UK Viral Chart, behind only the classic “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin. This track tops the chart, of course, due to the tragic death of Robin Williams who played the Genie in the Disney film. The Broadway cast of Aladdin performed a moving rendition of the song after one of their performances last week and the chart shows fans played their own tributes on Spotify as well.Drum and bass duo Sigma are at #3 with their new song “Changing”, Jamie T takes #4 with “Zombie”, and Kingsland Road’s “Dirty Dancer” rounds out the Top-5. As always, the Viral Chart is a rich source of new music from developing artists, making it one of the best places to discover new music on the internet.
