Summer is technically still a few weeks away, but it’s been nothing but “Summer” for the last five weeks on the Global Spotify charts.
The Calvin Harris track stays atop the chart for a fifth week this week, but its 9.3 million streams was a slightly lower total than last week’s record-breaking number. Even with the slight decrease, “Summer” still has a huge lead over this week’s runner-up, Ariana Grande’s “Problem”, so expect King Calvin’s reign to continue for the time being.
“Problem” is up a spot #3-#2 and Iggy Azalea’s hit “Fancy” is up #4-#3. This Iggyriana Grazalea (Ariaggy Azande?) two-song tandem has been running the charts in the US for weeks now and has been slowly moving up the global charts too. This week they knock David Guetta’s “Bad” down from #2-#4. While they’re still 1.5 million streams behind Harris at #1, there’s definitely a good chance these songs will compete for the top spot before too long.
Jason Derulo’s latest Talk Dirty single “Wiggle” jumped four spots this week into the Top-5 (#9-#5), and Nico & Vinz’ “Am I Wrong”, already a hit in the US, debuted in the global Top-10 this week (up #12-#10).
Brooklyn via Ithaca, NY’s X Ambassadors’ “Jungle” is the most viral song in the world this week, thanks to its use in a promotional campaign leading up to the World Cup.
Swedish metal legends In Flames are releasing their 11th album in September. The first single from that album, a track called “Rusted Nail”, is #2 on the Global Viral-50 this week. And it’s a particularly heavy week on the Viral Chart: Linkin Park’s collaboration with Daron Malakian from System of a Down, “Rebellion”, comes in third.
Iggy Iggz is #1 in the US for the sixth week in a row with “Fancy”, but this is the first time that the song has been #1 and NOT broken the record for streams in one week in the US. Still 3.31 million streams is nothing to sneeze at, and Azalea takes the top spot comfortably over “Problem” (which also experienced a slight decrease in streams this week).
“Summer” takes third in the US, making this the fifth week in a row that the US Top-3 has looked like it does this week.
Last week, Disclosure’s “Latch” peaked at #4 in the US, but this week it drops #4-#7 despite a modest increase in streams. That’s due to an influx of powerful newcomers: “Am I Wrong” (up a spot #5-#4), “Wiggle” (up two sports #7-#5), and MAGIC!’s summer jam “Rude” (up four #10-#6).
The US Viral-50 is brought to you by the letter X this week, as X Ambassadors are #1 and John Mayer’s cover of Beyoncé’s “XO” is second. “Happy Go Sucky Fucky”, a track from Die Antwoord’s bonkers new album Donker Mag, is third.
Jenny Lewis, indie darling and one of the brains behind Rilo Kiley, is putting out her first solo album in six years this year. The first single from that album is called “Just One of the Guys” and it’s #4 on the Viral Chart this week. And Cherub stays in the Top-5 for a third straight week with “Strip To This”, proving that Spotify Exclusives really get people talking.
Mr. Probz continues his reign atop the UK Spotify-50 with “Waves” for a sixth straight week, but this may be the final week the song finds itself at #1. Streams have been decreasing the last two weeks and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” is gaining ground fast at #2, so its looking more and more likely that these two tracks will switch places in the very near future.
Caribou is releasing his new album Our Love later this week, and we got the first taste of that record last week. “Can’t Do Without You” immediately shot to #1 in the UK Viral Chart, so it looks like this is one of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year there!
Die Antwood is #2 on the Viral Chart and Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” stays in the Top-3 at #3. Even though summer doesn’t officially start until later this morning, its certainly started early on the Spotify Charts.
Ones to Watch:
Banks is always successful on the Spotify Viral Chart, and her new song “Drowning” was released this week. Would be no surprise at all to see that track help Banks climb the Viral Charts yet again. Spoon’s first new album since 2010, They Want My Soul, is coming in August. This week they release the first single from that highly-anticipated album. It’s called “Rent I Pay” and it should definitely show up on the charts next week. And speaking of alt-rock royalty, Jack White’s Lazaretto is out this week and tracks from that will be streamed early and often all week.
