Spotify Chart Watch – May 6, 2014

Check out the latest Spotify-50 and Spotify Viral charts from all territories: http://www.spotifyartists.com/charts

Global Highlights:

“Rather Be” is still the most-played song in the world, but it looks like “Summer” is coming…

Clean Bandit retains the top spot on the Global Spotify-50 with nearly 8.5 million streams; this is the seventh week in a row at #1 for the British hit makers. Last week, almost two million streams separated them from #2, but this week the gap is closing fast. “Summer”, the latest banger from Calvin Harris, jumps five spots #7-#2 this week. Though it still sits a million streams behind “Rather Be”, streams increased by two million this week. So if the upward trajectory continues, we’ll have a new global #1 next week. Watch this space to find out what happens!

Another fast-grower, “Waves” from Mr. Probz, stays at #3 despite a strong stream increase. Katy Perry and John Legend round out the Top 5 with “Dark Horse” and “All of Me”, respectively. Streams for both of these many-week favorites both seem to have peaked and several tracks seem to be making early plays to be the Song of Summer 2014, so after a few weeks of chart stagnation look for some big moves and a lot of changeover in the coming weeks!

SevenLionsThe next wave of Spotify-50 favorites, as always, might be found in the Spotify Viral Chart. The most-viral song in the world this week belongs to California-based DJ/Producer Seven Lions, whose track “Don’t Leave” features Ellie Goulding and took over the internet worldwide this week. The song appears on his new EP Worlds Apart.

Another EDM-flavored track comes in at #2 on the Viral Chart, but from a somewhat unlikelier source: Coldplay. “A Sky Full of Stars”, their collaboration with Avicii, is set to appear on their new album Ghost Stories and takes runner up on the chart this week. The band performed this song (and “Magic”) on Saturday Night Live this weekend, so if “Magic”‘s success is any indication expect to see “Stars” making an impact on the Spotify-50 quite soon.

A Spotify Viral Chart regular takes #3 on the Global Chart: BANKS released her track “Goddess” to great internet fanfare this week. This marks her third Global Top-3 on the Viral Chart in six months. Not bad for an artist who hasn’t even released her debut album yet!

US Highlights:

Last week, we predicted the coronation of Iggy Azalea on the US Spotify-50 and her breakout hit really did not disappoint. “Fancy” was streamed 2.7 million times this week, easily good for #1, and in fact it’s the most a track has EVER been streamed in one week in the US! John Legend’s “All of  Me” ends a four-week run at the top and drops #1-#2.

Streams of “Fancy” increased by a full million and are still going up, so this potentially looks to be the start of an extended run at the top.

ArianaGrandeHOWEVER, a big debut at #3 might have other ideas about that. “Problem”, the new song from Ariana Grande that features the aforementioned “Iggy Iggz”, was streamed 1.6 million times last week and shows no signs of slowing down, so there’s a good chance for an Iggy vs. Ariana (featuring, um, Iggy) Battle Royale on the Spotify charts soon. Stay tuned to see what goes down.

“Dark Horse” is down a spot #4-#3 and “Summer” jumped seven spots #12-#5 to round out the Top-5. Like on the Global chart, this latest Calvin Harris jam has been moving up the US charts quickly, so expect it to challenge the Top-3 soon.

The Viral Chart in the US looks similar to the Global Viral Chart, with Seven Lions up top and BANKS in at #2.

The Frozen soundtrack has been making waves on the Spotify Charts all around the world for months now, so its no surprise that an Armin van Buuren of Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” entered the Viral Chart at #3. This track comes from DCONSTRUCTED, an album comprised of remixes of songs from Disney movies.

UK Highlights:

Kiesza topped the UK chart last week, but her reign at #1 was short-lived as Mr. Probz continued his unlikely ascent to the top and took #1 for the first week. “Waves” jumped three spots (#4-#1) and enjoyed a 400,000 stream increase, driving the total to nearly 1.4 million streams. This is the highest one-week stream total in the UK since Clean Bandit’s early days, so expect an extended run at the top for this track too!

“Hideaway” drops #2-#1 and “Rather Be” falls #3-#2.

MrProbz“Fancy” is making waves all over the world – it jumped four spots #8-#4 in the UK – and “All of Me” drops two spots #3-#5.

BANKS has the most viral track in the UK this week: “Goddess” beat out Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars” giving BANKS her second UK Viral Chart #1 of 2014 thus far.

Baz Luhrmann’s 1999 offbeat classic “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” pops up at #3 on the Viral Chart, and to be honest we’re not exactly sure why. If you know, tell us in the comments!

Ones to Watch:

It’s a big release week this week, with new songs from Usher, Bleachers, Austin Mahone, and The Roots entering the world (and, probably, the Spotify Charts). New albums from Hunter Hayes, Naughty Boy, Lily Allen, tUnE-yArDs, and Lykke Li should have an impact too.
