Spotify Chart Watch took a week off last week, but while we were gone not much changed at the top of the Global Spotify-50.Katy Perry continues her reign atop the chart as “Dark Horse” takes #1 for the third week in a row. She’s got a near-1.7 million stream advantage over Pitbull’s “Timber” at #2, so barring a major newcomer taking over, expect Katy to continue to rule for the near future.“Happy”, Pharrell Williams’ latest smash, rounds out the Top-3. This track should enjoy a nice bump thanks to the release of Pharrell’s new album G I R L and his performance at the Oscars last weekend, but we’ll have to see if it’s enough to move him it up the chart! The biggest jump on the Global chart this week came from UK sensation Clean Bandit. Their song “Rather Be”, featuring Jess Glynne, has been atop the British charts for a few weeks now after a quick rise to the top, and we’re seeing it rise up the Global chart as well. Last week it was at #13, and this week, thanks to an 1.5-million stream increase, it jumps nine big spots all the way up to #4! It will certainly be fun to watch this song’s meteoric rise continue.OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” rounds out the Top 5, down a spot #4-#5.This week, the most viral song in the world is Paco de Lucia’s classic “Entre Dos Aguas”. De Lucia passed away last week, and listeners celebrated his life and work by listening to and sharing his music with their friends. The Handsome Family’s “Far From Any Road” is #2 on the Global Viral Chart this week, as fans of the HBO drama True Detective continue to try and surmise the identity of the Yellow King. “Far From Any Road” is the theme song for the wildly popular show, whose season finale airs this week.
Ray LaMontagne’s new song “Supernova” comes in at #3. His album of the same name is set to be released later this year, and will be his first album since 2008.
“Dark Horse” is #1 again this week on the US Spotify-50; it’s been at the top of the Global chart for three weeks, but this is the seventh week in a row it tops the chart in the US.The rest of the Top-4 remains the same as well, as Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty”, Bastille’s “Pompeii”, and Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love” retain their spots at #2, #3, and #4 respectively. The Top-3 has been unchanged in the US for the past three weeks.Lorde’s latest “Team”, rounds out the Top-5, as “Royals” falls out of the Top-10 for the first time since July 28th of last year.
Ray LaMontagne takes the top spot on the US Viral Chart this week, ousting last week’s most-viral song, “#SELFIE”, the breakout hit from The Chainsmokers. The Chainsmokers have been blown away by the virality of this track. They recently told Spotify, “We all know a #SELFIE girl or guy, and thats what makes this song so relatable, even we are guilty of saying or thinking a line from this song at some point in time. But since we made this song, the number of #SELFIES we have taken and received has exponentially increased. We even received a #SELFIE of a guy taking one while his wife (we assume and hope it was her) giving birth in the background…” Clearly this is a track that gets people going: they stream it, they share it with their friends, they take a #SELFIE and share that with their friends too.Current Spotify Spotlight artist Foster The People is #3 on the Viral Chart this week with their single “Pseudologia Fantastica. Anticipation for their new album Supermodel is reaching a fever pitch; it’ll be out to the world on March 18th.
Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” is #1 for the fifth week in a row in the UK. It’s still breaking 1-million streams per week and sits almost 300,000 streams ahead of “Dark Horse” at #2.“Rather Be”‘s meteoric rise has been incredible to watch, and there’s another track quickly rising as well. Sam Smith, the velvety-voiced artist featured on last year’s “Latch” (Disclosure), has a new EP out and standout track “Money On My Mind” is making its way to the top. It’s up a whopping 18 spots this week, jumping #21-#3. We’ll have to see if it can continue the trend and knock Clean Bandit out of the top spot next week!Pitbull and Pharrell round out the Top-5 at #4 and #5, respectively. The most viral song in the UK is “Far From Any Road”, and a close second place belongs to Spotify Spotlight artist MØ and her cover of the Spice Girls’ classic “Say You’ll Be There”.
Ones to Watch:
The Oscars will certainly have an effect on the charts next week. Pharrell, Karen O, and U2 should expect a bump in streams thanks to their performances, and the Frozen soundtrack (featuring Adele Dazeem, I mean Idina Menzel) should have a big week.New tracks from Coldplay, Phillip Phillips, and Porter Robinson should have nice weeks, and new albums from Pharrell, Real Estate, and Glee star Lea Michele should have impact too.
