Spotify Chart Watch – Dec. 3, 2013

US – Top 50:

In the US, there’s a battle brewing between a Monster and a Pitbull on the Spotify-50.

“The Monster”, Eminem’s worldwide hit featuring Rihanna is #1 for the third week in a row. But “Timber” the lead single from Pitbull’s new EP Global Warming: Meltdown is rising fast. It’s up two spots this week #4-#2 and only 200,000 plays behind, so watch this space to see if there’s a new #1 next week!

“Timber”‘s rise to the Top 3 has pushed Lorde’s “Royals” and One Republic’s “Counting Stars” down a spot apiece: #2-#3 and #3-#4, respectively. But though these tracks fell in the chart, they’re still forces to be reckoned with.

Total track plays were down across the board last week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, so the rest of the Top 10 remains mostly unchanged from last week, with one major exception: One Direction’s “Story of My Life” shot up 11 places to blast into the Top-10 at #9.

Midnight Memories, the group’s third album in three years was released last week and had a big impact on the Top 50: five tracks placed on the chart this week.

US – Viral Highlights:

Fittingly, the most viral song in the US last week was Adam Sandler’s classic “The Thanksgiving Song”. Likely aided by an appearance during the Saturday Night Live Thanksgiving special, fans flocked to Sandler’s live album They’re All Gonna Laugh At You! to sing the song around the table (and share it with their friends on Spotify)! AdamSandler

Britney Spears may be celebrating her 32nd birthday this week, but younger sis Jamie Lynn Spears is celebrating a strong showing on the Viral Chart. The first single from her upcoming debut album, country-tinged “How Could I Want More”, debuts at #2.

But watch out for older sis to make an impact on the charts next week, as her album Britney Jean is released today.

“Say Something”, the piano ballad from A Great Big World, continues its assault on the Spotify charts. After getting a huge popularity boost from a performance on The Voice earlier in November,  the band took the track to new heights with a gig at the American Music Awards. It’s up a spot #4-#3 on the Viral Chart and debuted on the Spotify-50 at #17. Expect to hear this song a LOT more in the coming weeks!

Last week’s most viral track, “Hard Out Here” from Lily Allen, dropped to #15 this week. And the previous week’s #1, The Lumineers’ cover of “This Must Be The Place”, is at #17.

UK – Top 50:

Eminem and Rihanna are #1 for the third week in a row in the UK with Lorde taking her third week in the runner-up spot, but then it gets nutty.

But both tracks have a certain London boy band in their rearview mirrors: One Direction’s “Story of My Life” is coming up fast, debuting at #3 this week, only 8,000 plays behind “Royals”.

OneDirectionBut right behind “Life” is Bastille’s latest smash hit, “Of The Night”, off of the holiday reissue of Bad Blood. Up  a whopping 18 spots #22-#4 this week, this track had a 178% increase in streams this week, and we can only expect it to keep up the momentum.

Lily Allen’s cover of “Somewhere Only We Know” rounds out the top 5, up a spot #6-#5 this week.

UK – Viral Highlights:

The full version of Bonobo’s Late Night Tales compilation spends its second week in a row at #1 on Spotify’s Viral Chart in the UK, showing that when a huge artist and a huge series get together .. big things happen!

“Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)”, the latest single from DJ/Producer Ben Westbeech aka Breach is #2 this week. The house track is the latest to use James Brown’s famous “Yeah! Woo!” sample and is making waves in a big way in the UK.

Australian producer/DJ Flume enters the Viral Chart at #3 with his latest “Drop the Game”.

Sweden – Top 50

The entire Top-10 is unchanged in Sweden this week.

“Timber” only just hit #2 in the US, but it’s been there for four weeks in Sweden, and that’s where it sits this week too. The only track ahead of it, of course, is “The Monster”, which sits at #1 in 24 countries this week (including Sweden).

“The Monster” has been nothing short of a monster on all charts worldwide. In fact, it’s in the Top-3 in 30/32 territories where Spotify is launched and in the Top-5 in all but one of the territories where Spotify is launched (shout out to Mexico for being unique!).

Sweden – Viral Highlights

KartellenThe controversial hip-hop group Kartellen take the top spot with a track from their new album Ånger & Kamp Del. 2. “Svarta duvor & vissna liljor”, roughly translated to “Black Doves and Wither Lilies” is the most-shared-per-stream track in Sweden and definitively shows that Kartellen continues to put out music that people are talking about.

Metal legends Five Finger Death Punch’s cover of “House of the Rising Sun”, was the most viral track in Sweden last week, but this week it falls to #2.

Featured Chart – Austria

One of the few charts that doesn’t feature “The Monster” at the top is Austria. There, the pop-rock band My Fearless Friend takes the #1 spot with their song “Dieses Lied” (German for “This Song”). It’s the second week in a row this song has beaten out the likes of Pitbull, Lorde, Eminem and Avicii on the Austrian Spotify-50.

MyFearlessFriendAt #6 is Milky Chance, a German folk-pop band who put out their debut album Sadnecessary in October of this year. Their song “Stolen Dance” has become a hit in multiple countries across Europe, and this is their highest placing in the world.

Adel Tawil, half of the duo Ich + Ich, is finding success with his solo work, as “Lieder” goes up two spots #9-#7 this week.

The rapper Sido is dominating the Austrian Viral Chart this week, he celebrated his birthday by putting out a new album called 30-11-80 and tracks from that album debut at #1, #2, #4, and #7 this week.
