Spotify Chart Watch – Apr. 1, 2014

Global Highlights:

In a shocking twist, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” is #1 on the Global Spotify Chart this week! Just kidding / Happy April Fools. For the second week in a row Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” is the most-played song in the world, sitting 600,000 streams of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” at #2.

Clean Bandit’s rise to the top of the Spotify Charts was documented on last week’s Chart Watch and the world took notice: it was featured as a ‘Song to Watch’ on NBC’s The Today Show and Buzzfeed Music did an entire article about the track’s success on Spotify. Looks like it’s primed for an extended run at the top!

Perry’s run at #2 doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon, she’s a full million streams ahead of The Chainsmokers’ Viral Hit “#SELFIE”, which spends its second week in a row at #3.

Just like last week, Pharrell and Pitbull round out the Top 5 with “Happy” and “Timber”, respectively.

ShakiraThe most Viral song in the world this week belongs to Shakira. Her cover of the classic Catalan track “Boig per Tu”, which appears on her new self-titled album, tops the chart. It’s a popular song on a popular album by a popular artist, but as always, the Viral Chart uncovered more than that. This particular track is so Viral because it’s controversial: political tensions between Catalans and the rest of Spain have been bubbling up in recent weeks, and many are viewing Shakira’s choice to include a song written in Catalan as political endorsement. Whether or not that’s true, this is certainly a track that everyone’s talking about and the Viral Chart is, again, the best chart in the industry to show that!

The Black Keys come in at #2 on the Global Viral Chart this week with their new track “Fever”. They announced a new album, Turn Blue, last week and this is the first single from that album.

Future Islands continue their viral run this week; “Seasons (Waiting on You)” is up a spot #4-#3 and the momentum behind this track shows no signs of slowing down.

US Highlights:

At this point, “Dark Horse” is anything but an underdog. The track spends its 11th week in a row at #1 in the US, the longest such streak of the past year.

John Legend’s ballad “All of Me” is slowly closing the gap. Streams of the track increased by about 40,000 last week, which was good enough for a second week at #2. It currently sits about 40,000 streams behind “Dark Horse” (which had a big decrease this week), so next week might be the week that Perry’s reign at the top comes to an end. Watch this space to find out what happens!

The rest of the Top-5 is unchanged this week as well: Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” spends its second week at #3, “Pompeii” by Bastille is #4, and “Let It Go” from the Frozen Soundtrack is #5.

Big ScaryThe Black Keys’ “Fever” debuted at #1 on the US Viral Chart, showing that fans are clearly excited and ready for Turn Blue‘s release.

Big Scary, the duo from Australia, takes the runner-up spot on the chart this week. Their track “Twin Rivers” can be found on the Twin Rivers EP, which was released exclusively on Spotify last week.

Another newcomer to the chart, Sylvan Esso, is at #3. This is the side-project of Amelia Randall Meath (from the band Mountain Man), and her track “Coffee” got heavy media coverage when it was released last week.

UK Highlights:

“Rather Be” continues its run at the top of the UK Spotify-50 this week; it’s #1 for a ninth week in a row. John Legend’s “All of Me” is coming up strong, though, streams of that track increased by about 150,000 last week and jumped the song four spots #6-#2. Legend is still about 40,000 streams behind Clean Bandit, but if it keeps up this momentum it could be the track to end the “Rather Be” run at the top.

K“Dark Horse” drops a spot #2-#3, and Route 94′s “My Love” (which, like “Rather Be”, features Jess Glynne) drops #3-#4, both to make room for “All of Me”‘s strong week towards the top. We’ll have to wait for that Jess Glynne 1-2 punch in the top two spots, but being featured on 40% of the UK Top-5 isn’t so bad either.

Sam Smith rounds out the Top 5 with “Money on My Mind”, we’ll need to see if his performance on SNL this weekend bumps up his streams at all.

The most Viral song in the UK is “Fever”, but closely following at #2 is a track called “Hideaway” by newcomer Kiesza. This track is blowing up in the UK in a big way, and we expect this track to make the “viral crossover” into the Spotify-50 in no time.
